Wayback in 1983, BMX Freestyle riders, Rich Avella and ronw(AKA Ron Wilkerson), started the 2-HIp Trick Team, performing shows in fairs and public gatherings around NORCAL. Both ronw. and Rich were still in High School getting made fun of for riding those “little bikes”, but they didn’t care, they rode BMX! They stuck with it, hustling more and more shows until they were riding in enough shows to quit working @ a local Novato pizza establishment to have more time to ride.
ronw. was sending out 2hip TRICK TEAM resumes, and soon picked up co-sponsors like SKYWAY WHEELS and OAKLEY GRIPS. Then after a year of shows, the 2-HIp Trick Team was picked up by GT when they were first starting to make Freestyle bikes. |
 |
The 2-HIp team did their first tour for GT in 1984, blowing people's minds all around USA w/this new thing called BMX Freestyle riding. The tour was an amazing experience for the 2hip Team, amongst other things meeting all the ROCKVILLE crew- Slim, Spike, Hadji, Scooby, others- and then later on tour meeting BMX racer Rick Moliterno at the shop he worked at, and bringing him on tour to hang out for a few days getting him psyched on Freestyle. Rick went on to form the company Standard Bykes. |
 |
After the tour, Rich stopped riding to pursue music and attend college, and ronw. quit GT to ride for Haro Bikes. ronw. had many new tricks he invented up his sleeve, and soon ronw. became a top pro rider traveling the world doing demo's with Brian Blyther and Dave Nourie. |

Vert half-pipe ramps were becoming more and more common for BMX riding, but the contests of the day only involved quarter-pipe and kick-turn ramps. So ronw went to Bob Morales of the AFA and offered to organize AFA half-pipe jams with him, but Bob was not interested...andso the 2-HIp KING OF VERT jams were born! |
